A close affinity with the statue of St Stephen (98) shows that both were by the same hand.

Statue created - c.1665-1667
It was one of the 24 placed on the colonnade between September 1662 and March 1667

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
Held next to him is the gridiron that was his instrument of torture.

The young deacon,  one of the seven of Pope Sixtus II, was martyred under Valerian in Rome. He has been described as the most popular Roman martyr throughout history.
